Building More Inclusive Communities: Hair care

We are excited to share the opportunity to speak with Level 3 hairdressing and barbering students during their Career Day at West London Adult Educational Services. Sharing our experience of London Sensory Hair Care, opportunities for graduating students in the haircare industry, and the importance of inclusive hair services in our local communities.

The presentation was an opportunity to introduce the next generation of hair professionals to an area of the industry that is often overlooked: sensory-inclusive hair care for autistic individuals, people with learning disabilities, disabled and neurodivergent clients.

Why We Need More Hair Professionals in Our Communities

Hairdressers and barbers are more than people their service, thery are important part of the local communities.

For many people, visiting a hairdresser or barber can be difficult due t sensory overload, or lack of access to the location. And some families struggle to find professionals who provide inclusive services.

Hence, London sensory hair care continue to raise awareness for this cause, promoting sensory-inclusive hair services in our local communities, providing training, shared experience to other hair professionals in London and UK wide.

What Can an Inclusive Hair Service Look Like?

Inclusive hair care does not not necessarily mean expensive tools or big changes to your salon. It starts with simple adjustments such as:

  • Ask the client, parent or carer what they need before the appointment
  • Explaining what you are going to do before touching the client, asking for permission
  • Allowing additional time if needed, or few breaks
  • Reducing unnecessary noise or light where possible
  • Allowing a parent or carer to support the client
  • Understanding that every client is different

Most importantly, you should not assume, ask and adapt.

And everyone deserves to feel comfortable in the chair.

London Sensory Hair Care — helping to make hair care more inclusive, one appointment and one community at a time.
