Struggles with Personal Care with Autistic Persons
Problems/Struggles with personal Care
Most autistic people (children and adults) find it difficult to care for themselves daily, from brushing their teeth, to body washing and hair care. Individuals with sensory differences may find it difficult to cope, having anxiety due to the intensity with some products, this may cause the individual to avoid personal care.
The role of Parents/Carers and Foster carers
Supporting children and adults with SEND (Special Educational Needs), ADHD, autism, and complex neurological needs everyday can be incredibly challenging. Having a structured routine makes daily activities easy and less tense.
As a sensory haircare provider, I see this every day. What looks like a simple task can feel overwhelming for a child equally stressful for the adult trying to support them.
Why Personal Care Can Be Difficult for individuals with executive function skills
When it comes to personal care, autistic people face difficulties based on their abilities and skills, individuals with sensory processing differences use routines to manage everyday tasks, however, when it becomes too tense can, affect their:
- Haircare (brushing, washing, cutting hair)
- Toothbrushing (taste, texture, vibration)
- Bathing or body washing (water pressure, temperature, sound)
- Getting dressed (fabric textures, tight clothing, labels)
The Reality for Parents and Carers
Supporting an individual on the spectrum can be emotionally and physica;;y demanding , however, staying true to the routines, makes room for growth and adjustments, feeling:
- Unsure about the best approach
- Worry about causing distress
- Experience daily struggles around hygiene routines
- Find it difficult to access sensory-friendly services.
Best Ways to Support Sensory-Friendly Personal Care
Patience is the first step. With the right approach, personal care can become more manageable.
Here are some sensory-friendly strategies:
Use gentle, non-perfume, sensory-friendly products
Create a predictable routine, if possible, keep sensory notes
Allow extra time, with star jumps and breathing exercises
Introduce low noise tools gradually (brushes, toothbrushes, products)
Let the child have some control (choose products or timing).
